Casino Pier is being expanded onto the beach on the pier's north side after the state approved a controversial beach-swap plan with the borough.

The as-yet-unnamed roller coaster is a Eurofighter model manufactured by German amusement ride builder Gerstlauer, according to Maria Mastoris, the pier's marketing manager.

Seaside traded Casino Pier's owners, the Storino family, 1.36 acres of beach in exchange for the iconic 1910 Dentzel/Looff Carousel, which has resided in Seaside since 1932.

The borough also will receive a parking lot located between Sampson and Carteret avenues, where Seaside plans to build a pavilion to house the carousel and an amusement museum.

The Jet Star roller coaster, formerly located on the pier, was dumped into the ocean when superstorm Sandy sheared off the pier's eastern end in October 2012. The roller coaster in the ocean became one of the enduring images from the storm.

Seaside Mayor Anthony Vaz said he welcomes the new rides, which he hopes will lure more families to the borough.

'This is a big project for the community,' the mayor said. 'The Storino family have thrown a lot of money into the community. They have great faith in what the community can become and will become.'

Seaside officials have been working to rebrand the borough as a family destination in the wake of twin disasters: 2012's superstorm Sandy, which flooded Seaside and destroyed sections of Casino Pier and Funtown Pier, and 2013's boardwalk fire, which devastated the south end of the boardwalk and burned what remained of Funtown.

Borough officials and many business owners considered the expansion of Casino Pier vital to Seaside's tourism community, especially as it seems unlikely that Funtown Pier will be rebuilt.

Many spoke in favor of the beach swap at hearings the borough held on the plan.

But others argued that it was a bad idea to trade a portion of beach for a carousel that could be expensive to restore and operate.

In September, an Ocean County Superior Court Judge ruled against a Seaside man's contention that the Borough Council acted illegally when it voted in favor of the beach swap deal.

'This is an attempt to restore the local economy,' Judge Arnold B. Goldman said, before ruling in favor of the Storino family, which owns Casino Pier, and the borough, 'to create a tax ratable and to preserve a local iconic piece of the borough's history.'

Vaz said the business community realizes an expanded Casino Pier is needed to draw more tourists.

'The business community, as well as the property owners, all realize the importance of this new adventure,' he said of the new roller coaster and Ferris Wheel.

The roller coaster will carry riders at 45 mph along more than 1,000 feet of track. The roller coaster includes an Immelman turn, in which riders will make a half-loop and then exit traveling in the opposite direction, and a 360-degree 'heartline roll,' according to a Casino Pier press release.

The roller coaster has two, eight-passenger cars with lap-bar restraints.

The 131-foot-tall Ferris Wheel has a total of 34 six-passenger cars, and one of the cars is accessible for disabled riders. The Ferris Wheel will give riders great views of the boardwalk, beach and ocean.

'I looked at the diagram the other day and they're really beautiful,' Vaz said.

Work continues on the expanded pier, with workers installing decking in recent days.

Casino Pier is an amusement park situated on a pier, in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, United States. The pier opened in 1932 and formerly extended approximately 300 ft (91 m) into the Atlantic Ocean, from the narrow strip of the Barnegat Peninsula (approximately 6 blocks) in which Seaside Heights is situated.

Casino Pier was partially destroyed in October 2012 after part of the pier collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean due to the storm surge generated by Hurricane Sandy.[1] Park management rebuilt the pier's lower deck, and a shortened version of the pier reopened with limited rides in 2013.[2] An expansion for the pier opened in 2017, which includes Hydrus (a Euro-Fighter roller coaster) and a Ferris wheel.

Facilities[edit]

Casino Pier just after Hurricane Sandy

Casino Pier is an amusement facility center composed of numerous rides, games, and concession stands. Before Hurricane Sandy, there were 38 rides on the pier, ranging from family rides to roller coasters; other attractions include a rooftop miniature golf course, a chairlift that runs the length of the Seaside Height's boardwalk north of Casino Pier, a figure 8 Go-Kart track, and numerous concession stands which serve typical boardwalk fare (pizza, cheese steaks, sausage sandwiches, ice cream, funnel cake, and lemonade).

Located in the Casino Pier Arcade, between the boardwalk and Ocean Terrace is the historic antique carousel built by Dentzel and Looff in 1910 named the Dr. Floyd L. Moreland Carousel. This carousel first arrived in Seaside in 1928. A Wurlitzer style #146-A Military Band Organ originally built in 1923 is also included to provide the carousel's music. The arcade also houses the Pier Grille, a restaurant. The arcade features numerous arcade games, including claw and pusher redemption games, many popular video games, as well as classic arcade offerings such as Skee-Ball, pinball, and video poker.

The pier itself also featured several games. Some are games of chance, such as spinning wheels, but more often, the games involved a rudimentary amount of skill, such as a ring toss, basketball shoot, and Ladder Climb.

Although most of Casino Pier's offerings have been on the pier itself, additional Casino Pier recreational and concessional areas are located on the boardwalk between Grant Avenue and Sherman Avenue. Casino Pier owns a water park across the street, Breakwater Beach, which was remodeled in 2003 from the original Water Works water park that once stood on the property. Breakwater Beach incorporates numerous water slides with a heavy focus on families. Breakwater Beach has undergone several phases of reconstruction, and several slides have been rebuilt.

The antique Dentzel/Looff carousel was acquired from Casino Pier in 2017 to refurbish and relocate it. The carousel has been closed and was shut off on April 7, 2019 and the disassembly and relocation process began in November 2019. The carousel will eventually be relocated to a new building which will eventually be built specifically to house it and to be a carousel museum. The building is planned to be located next to the boardwalk between Carteret and Sampson avenues.[3] The carousel is scheduled to reopen in its new location by 2021.[4]
